Here is a list of rights that we all have:
- I have the right to be responsible for my own actions. I am not responsible for the actions of others; they are.
- I have the right to make mistakes. Other people have the right to make mistakes, too.
- I have the right to be myself. Other people have the right to be themselves.
- I have the right to be treated with respect. Other people also have the right to be treated with respect by me.
- I have the right to have my own feelings, thoughts and opinions. Other people are entitled to their own feelings, thoughts and opinions, even if they differ from mine.
- I have the right to say no and not feel guilty. Other people also have the right to say a guilt-free “no”.
- I have the right to change my mind. Other people also have the right to change their mind.
- I have the right to say “I don’t know.” Other people also have the right to say “I don’t know.”
- I have a right to feel and express anger in a way that is respectful of others. Others have a right to feel and express anger respectfully, as well.
- I have the right to have my needs matter as much as any other person. Others also have a right to have their needs matter, too.
- I have the right to do things that others might not approve of. Others also have the right to do things that I might not approve of.
- I have the right to ask for clarity from other people when there are things I do not understand. Others also have the right to ask for clarity from me if they do not understand something.
- I have the right to ask for help. Others also have the right to ask for help.
For every right I have, others also have the same right. Remember this when you want others to respect your rights. It should also be stated that even though you have the right to, for instance, ask for help, it does not guarantee that the request gets granted. Remember, everyone has a right to say “no”. The above list really boils down to honoring the golden rule; do unto others as you would have them do to you.
Until next time, Peace.
